Block of the Month for May

Hi all Caroline (Deputy Nut) bringing you a great block of the month to try this month.

This one is called "Courthouse Steps"

Following on from last month having the feature fabric in the centre, we are going to work on having a novelty fabric in the centre of this one as well.  Jan-Maree has asked if we can stick to the Red White and Blue colour theme with an Aussie Flavour.  We are looking to put together some Wounded Warrior Quilt tops with the BOM's from this month.

So what you will need :

Cut yourself some 5 & 1/2 " squares in your feature fabrics and then some 2 " strips WOF  of the colour for your steps... I have used red for one side and blue for the other side.  Alternatively you could use scrappy steps in different shades of the same colour.

Cut your first 2 strips 5 &1/2" (red) long  and sew them to the top and bottom of your square using a 1/4 inch seam. Press your seams towards the red in this case.

Cut your next 2 strips 8 & 1/2 "(blue) long and sew them to each side of the block as shown above and below.  Press your seams towards the blue

Cut your next 2 strips 8 & 1/2" (red) long and then sew these to the top and bottom of your block. Press your seams towards the red.

Cut your next 2 strips 12" (blue) long and then sew these to the sides of your block.
Press your seams towards the blue

Cut your next 2 strips 12" (red) long and sew these to the top and bottom of your block.
Press the seams towards the red.

Cut your final 2 strips 15 & 1/2" (blue) strips and sew these to the sides of your block.
Press the seams towards the blue.
Your finished block should be 15 &1/2 " square

Here are 4 completed blocks I have made side by side.

In this instance I have decided to use some of the Lindcraft Australia Fabric as alternate blocks.  You will need 15 blocks to complete a quilt top the correct size.  So I need to add another 2 rows.

I hope you have fun with this one... I chain pieced mine and made all 5 blocks at once and they went together quite quickly.

Have fun and I can't wait to see what you come up with.
Til next time

Caroline (Caz) Deputy Nut
